About A Little R&R Tai Tapu

A Little R&R is based out near beautiful Tai Tapu in our eco-friendly property, just 15 minutes drive from Christchurch.
We're open everyday of the week with 4 amazing therapists to choose from.
Nestled in ten acres of countryside with two dogs, two chooks and too many ducks, the Yurt sits among a biodynamic food forest Thea and her partner are creating.

The Yurt is a wonderful space to have your aches and pains melted away.

About Thea, Clinic Director

Dip Mass CCNM, Bsc (Hons), Dip Law

Born in the UK, Thea moved to Christchurch in 2008 especially to study at the Canterbury College of Natural Medicine, completing a Diploma of Massage in 2010. After 2 knee operations for an ACL tear, it was her Canadian massage therapist who most helped her out of her pain spiral and into a healthier movement pattern. It was that which prompted Thea along this career path, changing from Law into Soft Tissue Therapy. During the Diploma, she fell in love with working on pregnant women and specialised in both soft tissue rehabilitation and pregnancy massage.

Since then Thea has completed further courses in:

Advanced Sports Massage: CCNM

Advanced Pregnancy Massage: Leslie Stager & Marina Locke

Hawaiian Pregnancy Massage

Anatomy Trains (MyoFascial technique)

Fascial Kinetics/Bowen Therapy

Joint Mobilisation and Arthrofascial Stretching

Thea worked at SportsMed in Lincoln and Sports Rehab in Halswell and massaged international sports teams during their time in Christchurch including The All Blacks, The Silver Ferns and the NZ Waterpolo team. This background has given her good experience with helping clients out of acute or chronic pain gained either from a sports injury, long-term postural stressors or the normal aches & pains of life.

Thea is a level 6 registered therapist with Massage New Zealand, our governing body. She is currently a glutton for punishment and studying Pain Management through Otago University.

Our Philosophy

The Little R&R Philosophy is to combine therapeutic massage with deeper clinical knowledge of how the soft tissues of the body feel when they are working optimally (or not, in most cases).  In the practice of balancing and maintaining functional muscle movement and healthy muscle tone, we work alongside a multidisciplinary team of trusted professionals throughout Christchurch & Selwyn.

We believe healthy and pain free movement is helped by

specific muscle stretching alongside specific muscle strengthening

We can feel which muscles need which work as we're trained to be able to tell the

difference in muscle tone and activation.

If we can get you moving more - that's the biggest key to managing chronic pain

Our goal is to give each client the right tools and knowledge (tricks of the trade, if you will) in order to help themselves out of pain and keep them moving pain free long into the future.

We treat each client as a whole person, we don't just treat the area of pain. There are no 'one size fits all' massages here, as every client has a unique body with unique needs that will change day to day.

As a general rule with recurring acute/chronic pain;

where the pain is is not always where the major problem is.

What we know so far is that the experience of pain is a combination of biological factors (electrical, structural or chemical), psychological factors (thoughts and beliefs about what this pain means to you) and social factors (how the people in your life interact with you knowing of this pain and how that affects you).

What we specialise in is the structural part of the biological bit - soft tissue manipulation and

we can conduct a full postural assessment on each client to check if a painful movement issue starts from postural stress and/or compensation pattern.

We Promise

To listen, to stay focused, to do our best to ease your pain in body & mind and give you the best tools we know to empower you to help yourself live pain-free.

Our Responsibility

We extend our holistic approach to the environment and the community. We practice our family's motto 'Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ daily. We chose to use as little energy and water as possible here. We have a luxury compost toilet instead of a flushing one, to save water in these times of uncertain weather patterns. We’re proud to support products made in NZ.

The Yurt is made near Nelson and all our massage products are organic and NZ made. On our property we take active steps to reduce our environmental footprint. We support Biodynamic farming and are creating a food forest to reduce our reliance on supermarkets and food miles.

Testimonial

"Thea is amazing! I spent 2 years seeing various physios and even an orthopaedic surgeon in regards to some recurring knee pain and had no real diagnosis. One visit to Thea and she identified the source of the pain! 6 weeks later it was almost completely gone!"
